A complete online musical education grounded in the science of emergent literacy

The Hoffman Method is unique among piano methods because it trains students to play both by ear and by sight. Children are natural imitators, and their brains are wired to pick up language intuitively. Step one is guiding a child to experience the music. We do this through listening, singing, solfège, and movement. Once the music feels familiar to the child, the next step is to explore the melodic and rhythmic patterns embedded in the music, which naturally leads to playing on the piano. Once the child has successfully sung and played a song, then they are prepared to explore the notational symbols. These steps follow the same sequence that every child experiences in learning their native language: hear, imitate, then read.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most effective way to learn piano?

The most effective way to learn piano is by following a structured approach that helps students meet their musical goals. Many families find that in-person or online piano lessons help bring music into their homeschool. Following a proven method and creating a regular schedule to practice and learn also helps students learn piano effectively.

Beginner pianists also need to learn to train their musical ear, learn to read sheet music, and solidify the basics of playing a new instrument. Hoffman Academy’s online piano lessons offer a complete piano lesson program that is fun and includes everything homeschool kids and parents need for success. The science of learning and child development are at the root of our high-quality curriculum and learning resources. Our piano program also develops independent learning through daily practice plans and progress tracking.

Is it possible to learn piano from home?

Yes, homeschooled students can learn piano from home. Piano lessons can bring music and joy to your homeschool through Hoffman Academy’s online program. Our modern piano learning methods make learning from home possible by teaching piano and music theory through tutorials, practice sessions, and games. Using a computer or tablet, any homeschool student can access the on-demand video lessons that form the cornerstone of our comprehensive music curriculum.

You can make the most of learning piano from home by scheduling regular time for piano lessons and practice for your homeschoolers. Most Hoffman Academy students work through 2-3 piano tutorials a week with daily practice between lessons. Music learning works best when students make time to practice regularly and to view new piano lessons.

How should I choose online music lessons for my kids?

When choosing online music lessons, consider the unique learning styles of your child. Every child’s development is different, and online music lessons can be tailored to meet their unique needs in a homeschool environment. Hoffman Academy’s mix of video tutorials, games, and music theory worksheets reaches children with different learning styles.  If you have multiple kids in your homeschool, a competitive younger sibling might prefer points-motivated learning, while an internally motivated eldest child might enjoy completing the lessons and guided practice sessions.

At Hoffman Academy, we make learning music fun with motivational achievements like games and earning points. Our students learn music theory and healthy piano technique through songs and video tutorials grounded in music education. Students also receive guided practice sessions that teach how to practice. Our online music lessons teach the fundamental components of music education, from playing the piano to music theory concepts including reading sheet music and playing by ear.

Are there free options for online music lessons?

Hoffman Academy’s online piano lessons include over 400 free video tutorials. These videos guide you step-by-step through everything from posture and finger numbers to reading music and playing full songs. Our online music education platform makes learning fun, approachable, and rewarding for homeschoolers.

These free lessons teach real skills grounded in music education, and Hoffman Academy Premium offerings unlock companion features that make learning music even easier for your homeschooler. With our Premium membership, your homeschoolers can access customized practice sessions and music theory games as well as our entire library of supplemental sheet music, music theory worksheets, and handy reference guides.

We know not all homeschoolers can use their funding for subscription services. To accommodate homeschoolers using ESA funds and charter schools, our Homeschool Purchase Platform offers direct pay and invoicing options for our Premium curriculum. If your charter school only supports materials purchase rather than memberships, we also offer the Method Books for purchase separately.

What's taught in a homeschool music curriculum?

A homeschool music curriculum teaches songs and exercises to guide students through learning music theory and how to play an instrument. Our structured curriculum uses theory pages, scales and exercises, and songs and tutorials to teach fundamentals including rhythm and ear training. From sightreading sheet music to playing by ear and improvising, homeschoolers become confident piano players and well-rounded musicians with the Hoffman Method.

Let Hoffman Academy’s exceptionally designed curriculum simplify your homeschool music experience. The Hoffman Method teaches music skills sequentially by introducing songs alongside the parts that make them up. Students learn music theory concepts including rhythm and note identification as they learn to play the song in each lesson. Playing songs empowers students to use music theory concepts like note identification and ear training in context.

What age should a child start homeschool piano lessons?

Many of our students start learning piano between the ages of six to eight. Every child is different, so one child who reads early and is motivated to learn might be ready at an earlier age than another child. Some developmental milestones to look for in your homeschooler include hand size and finger independence as well as an interest in the piano.

Between the ages of six to eight, the brain is primed to learn new languages and build new connections. The Hoffman Method takes advantage of this time of neuroplasticity to teach students to truly comprehend musical language. Rooted in early child development and learning theory, our program uses a multi-sensory and engaging approach to teach students how to play piano. Our lessons begin by teaching music by ear to create a strong foundation of musical understanding before progressing to skills like sightreading and understanding music theory. In every lesson, our students make progress and have fun, building a lifelong appreciation of music.

My school placed an order, but I don’t see Premium access yet. Why?

This may happen for a couple of reasons. First, it can take between 1-3 business days for fulfillment. If it’s been more than 1-3 business days, there may be a fulfillment delay due to an email address mismatch. We recommend checking your spam inbox to see if you received an email from onlineschool@hoffmanacademy.com and follow the instructions inside. The most common reason for fulfillment delays are families failing to create a Free Hoffman Academy Account after their school makes their purchase.
